The Qur'an (translated for Westerners to read), that I purchased not long ago from my local book store reads: "Make war upon such of those to whom the Scriptures have been given as believe not in God, or the Last Day, and who forbid not that which God and His Apostle have forbidden, and who profess not the profession of the truth, until they pay tribute out of hand, and they be humbled." (Surah 9:29).

However; what the true Qu'ran really says is: "Kill [Slay] those who believe not in Allah nor hold that forbidden which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."
